ECU game

First off, let me say that I never doubted Ryan Williams would have a good game. He was amazing and never quit working hard. That being said, the playcalling didn't help us too much, and I did have my doubts that Stinespring would have a good game. I was right to doubt.

I view most of our yards coming off of broken plays where Tyrod saved us with his legs, or Williams getting hit after a short gain and just kept moving. Yards after contact probably account for 2/3 of our rushing game last night, which means if ECU hadn't missed tackles, we could all be complaining about a loss to ECU right now. Instead, we get to complain about a pathetic-looking win. It got to the point last night where I wrote down four plays (Long pass, run up the middle, run to the short side, quick pass to the flat) and let my girlfriend pick from them each play. She got 9/20 by just guessing, since she wasn't familiar with the formations. That's 45% that she was able to correctly guess right. If she can do it by guessing, I'd think a defensive coordinator would pick up on the playcalling eventually. Where is our intermediate passing game? Where are our TE routes? Wild Turkey to mix it up? Anything would be better than what we've been seeing, because we look like we run out of the Turkey-on-a-Leash formation right now. Stinespring needs to get out of the OC office, that's for sure. But this is where I had some second thoughts about firing him completely.

Remember those years when VT used to dominate a defense and punish them with the run game? Our O-line destroyed just about everyone it came across. So what happened? Stinespring was our O-line coach among his other coaching positions. He got a great O-line that really pushed around a defense, and was able to provide pass protection when we needed it. So Stinespring moves on to other things (ruining our offense) and Curt Newsome comes in to run the O-line. What happens next? Sacks, missed blocks, litte to no pass protection, etc. Not really the best scenario for an OC to try and run an offense.

Another point to consider is this: remember that David Wilson guy? The guy who's bringing back memories of when we recruited that Ryan Williams guy? He's a Stinespring recruit. Bryan Stinespring has been one of the best recruiters for VT, especially considering the offensive woes. I find it amazing that he's able to go out and get a guy like Wilson after coming off of a couple years where the Offense ranks 100th or worse. That's a true testament to his ability to recruit good talent, and I'm beginning to rethink completely letting him go from the team.

So here's my solution:

Fire Curt Newsome
Move Stinespring to head of Recruiting (He used to be this anyway) and O-line coach (give him a raise to make him happy if necessary)
Hire new OC

Everybody wins...I hope. Maybe if Maryland loses some more games Friedgen will be replaced as their Head Coach, and Beamer can hire his long-time buddy as our new OC. We can only dream right?

  1. You mentioned Bryan Stinespring recruited David Wilson as proof that he is a great recruiter. I don't know much about what it takes to recruit players. But, I can't imagine recruiting for Virginia Tech in the state of Virginia is that difficult of a job.

Now, snagging Kevin Jones from Pennsylvania? Wow. Way to go Stinespring! Oh wait. History tells a different story. Ward recruited this star: http://www.hokiesports.com/football/recaps/02142001aaa.html

Is Stinespring that great of a recruiter? Who has he recruited outside of our strong recruiting area?

  2. I'll admit he hasn't really gotten any big names outside of our recruiting area, but how many other teams encroach into our area and steal away the talent? UVA is always competing with us, not to mention other nearby schools, like WV, UNC, NCST, ECU, Duke, etc. And not to mention the bigger schools from the SEC, Big X, Big XII, and USC from the PAC-10 can and will take the talent from anywhere in the country. Just look at the talent in Virginia in any year: Recruiting Stats from ESPN

We got some of that talent but a lot of it escapes us. I am by no means defending Stinespring as far as his playcalling goes, but he is a good recruiter, even if it is in-state.
